MATCH REPORT

Henbury and Rockleaze’s last home game of the season against Totterdown United was played out in balmy sunshine at Arnall Drive with both sides playing their part in a competitive match. H&R started the better and controlled much of the first half and Harvey Moran should have opened the scoring on 16 minutes when through on goal but his side footed effort was wide. Three minutes later Fraser Butt’s free kick was expertly turned round the post by Ashley Martin and then on 30 minutes Tate Shaw slotted home at the second time of asking after good work by H&R’s midfield. It certainly wasn’t all one-way traffic with Totterdown looking good on the break. The second half was much different with Totterdown now starting to take control; however, on 49 minutes Moran found himself clean through on goal again, and again his effort was past the post. Chaz Hemmings fired wide for Totts on 76 minutes after some great wing work by George Saunders and on 89 minutes Joe Hodson’s effort for H&R was tipped over by Martin. Totts continued to push and push and with the last kick of the game outgoing manager Jack Thorley passed the ball into the net after finding himself free in the middle to deservedly take a share of the points at 1-1.

MATCH REPORT

On a warm Friday evening Henbury & Rockleaze's penultimate home game ended in a 1-1 draw with Quedgeley Wanderers which extended the home team’s unbeaten record and ensured Quedgeley maintained their Gloucestershire County League status. In a game of few chances the first fell to Dan Webb on 17 minutes after the Quedgeley goalkeeper Nathan Charnock miss kicked a clearance to him, however Charnock recovered to gather the long-distance effort. Quedgeley deserv

edly took the lead on 35 minutes when skipper Sean Lawson had a snap effort from the edge of the area where a slight deflection wrong footed Harry Trett in the H&R goal to the delight of the away support. H&R huffed and puffed but didn’t create much of interest until the 44th minute when a ball around the corner from Harvey Moran allowed Callum Winter to dink the ball over Charnock to take the teams in level at the break. On 75 minutes Dylan Venn should have done better from a Fin Jenner cross but could only guide his header against the post which then rebounded safely back into the hands of Trett. On 81 minutes Trett made superb save tipping a goal bound effort around the corner from Nathan Payne, however, H&R should have won it on 89 minutes when substitute Joe Hodson did well to beat 2 defenders cut inside but his effort was 2-feet wide of the post when there were men free in the box. Whilst this was a cagey game it was another decent advert for County League football.

Saturday 19th April 2025

MATCH REPORT

At The Field Almondsbury took on one of the form sides Henbury and Rockleaze. H&R with their first attack forced a corner and from it Almondsbury had a number of attempts to clear and from a looping ball in the box Jack Burgess unfortunately turned the ball into his own net. After 5 minutes Almonds got a corner and but Burgess headed into the side-netting. On fourteen minutes Holver went down the left and pulled back for Hughes but his strike was just wide. A few minutes later Holver did well to win a free kick on the left and Hughes stepped up and whipped the ball into the top left corner for 1-1. On 24 minutes a quick H&R break, and from an unfortunate bobble the ball fell to Drew Sawdon to finish well past Sam Burgess for H&R to lead 2-1. Hughes had a vicious strike which Dunning did well to push behind for a corner and just before the break Hughes delivered a good ball which Meacham could only stretch to head over. Almonds created a few chances in the second half – on 47 minutes Pali had an effort blocked and Nicholls rebound was just over the bar. Ten minutes later Hughes free kick was destined for the top corner but Dunning tipped over at full stretch and on 77 minutes Mannings free kick was knocked on by Lancastle but Dunning made a good reactive save. Almondsbury's cause not helped by Jack Burgess being dismissed for an off the ball incident. H&R held on for a fine 2-1 win and Almonds have to now give it all on Thursday evening.

Saturday 12th April 2025

MATCH REPORT

Broadwell Amateurs suffered a frustrating afternoon at the Hawthorns as visiting Henbury & Rockleaze capitalised on early dominance and defensive lapses to take all three points. The game couldn’t have started in a worse fashion for the hosts as H&R scored in the opening minute with a swift move down the flank and a pinpoint cross finding Drew Sawdon unmarked in the box to head home giving Jack Watkins no chance. Shaken by the early setback, Broadwell almost responded in spectacular fashion when Jamie Creed unleashed a powerful strike which struck the crossbar. An enforced Broadwell substitution along with a couple of unforced errors allowed H&R to control much of the first half. The visitors doubled their lead on 38 minutes when Moran, who displayed impressive pace and composure outpaced the Broadwell defence down the right and cut in to fire a rocket into the top corner for 2-0. The second half offered little change in tempo or fortune for Broadwell and despite periods of promising play, clear-cut chances were elusive. On 52 minutes Dan Brain’s curling effort from range did beat Harry Trett but struck the post and bounced away. Just five minutes later, Brain was involved again setting up Jamie Belfitt with a cross which was headed wide. H&R scored a third on 74 minutes, Broadwell’s misjudged attempt to play out from the back and a miscue followed by a slip from Watkins led Toms to slot into an empty net. Neither side managed another shot on target after that and 3-0 it ended for Henbury and Rockleaze who continue their good form.

Saturday 5th April 2025

MATCH REPORT

At Bristol Barbarians RFC Totterdown United hoped to play better against Henbury and Rockleaze than they did two weeks ago in the League Cup. H&R started the brighter of the two teams and made the most of their start when Goulden beat Totts keeper Martin to the ball and looped it into the net. Totterdown grew into the game and started playing some nice football, and on the half hour Chaz Hemmings shot was tipped onto the post by Trett, the ball bounced back, struck him and ended up into the net for an unfortunate own-goal and 1-1. H&R started the second half the stronger and controlled most of the proceedings with Totts mainly defending. H&R took the lead on 65 minutes when Harrison’s shot went through a number of bodies and into the net. For the remaining 20 minutes Totterdown tried to find an equaliser but never did enough to score and in the last minute they were convinced there was a handball but the Referee waved the protests away and H&R got a well earnt three points with a 2-1 win.

MATCH REPORT

A healthy crowd on Henbury & Rockleaze’s annual ‘reunion’ day saw the home team dispose of Ruardean Hill Rangers 2-0 to continue their good run and it should have been a lot more if it were not for the heroics of Hill keeper Aaron Underwood. The game started at a terrific pace with H&R running at Hill’s back line with pace and purpose. The first chance fell to Kacper Kalkowski on 16 minutes after some neat play between Marcus Williams and Drew Sawdon put Kalkowski one-on-one with Underwood who saved superbly with his legs to start what would become a familiar story. Two minutes later Harvey Moran delivered a superb cross into the six-yard box where Sawdon smashed his diving header at goal only for Underwood’s outstretched right arm to tip the ball onto the crossbar to make a save as good as anything you will see at this level of football. On 27 minutes Goulden saw another effort saved by Underwood and at this point apart from the odd corner or set piece it was all one-way traffic. H&R deservedly took the lead on 35 minutes when James Goulden found himself free on the right and Kalkowski smashed the ball home. After such a frenetic and quick first period the second took time to get going, however, the familiar story of Underwood saving shots at will recommences on 66 minutes when Williams flick header from a corner was turned around the post. On 71 minutes he made another great save from Sawdon whose shot through a number of bodies following a goalmouth scramble. On 72 minutes Kalkowski should have doubled H&R’s lead but his attempt was rather weak. Two minutes later Underwood made two fine saves from Goulden and Harrison, with those in attendance wondering if this was to become a classic ‘smash and grab’ game. The home team were becoming frustrated and the visitors growing in confidence. However, H&R put the game to bed in the 87th minute when Rhys Iles found himself one-on-one with Underwood and his left foot found the net to wild cheers from the home faithful. H&R deserving the three points with a 2-0 victory but most of the plaudits taken by that man Aaron Underwood.

MATCH REPORT

At the Bell Field, Frampton United hosted Henbury and Rockleaze in a hard-fought game which belied H&R’s league position. Frampton got off to a quick start and scored after only six minutes when a long cross to the back post was met by Manolo Espada who headed past Harry Trett for what, as it turned out to be, the game’s only goal. The remainder of the game ebbed and flowed with few clear-cut chances for either team. H&R’s Drew Sawdon was unlucky when his snap shot from the edge of the box which came back off the post, and Frampton’s best chances all came from free kicks and on 21 minutes a free kick delivered into the box was sliced by a defender, came back off the crossbar but Lewis Vye shot wide. In the 65th minute Craig Mills headed back across the box but again Vye’s shot was wide. The final effort came from another Espada free kick, Jacob Geddes rose highest but headed wide and there it ended a valuable three points for Frampton United.

First to the Bristol Barbarians RFC where Totterdown United took on Henbury & Rockleaze in a semi final match of the League Cup. Totterdown started slowly but grew into the game and had a couple of half-chances in the first half-hour. H&R scored their first goal from a corner against the run of play, Matt Harrison scoring which took the wind out of Totts sails. Just before half-time H&R got their second Marcus Williams again from a corner. Totterdown started the second half the better of the two teams, but it was H&R who put the game to bed with Drew Sawdon scoring from yet another corner. Totts were the reduced to ten with Toby Carter getting a second yellow and H&R took advantage and controlled the remainder of the game scoring another two goals one from Jordan Buckett and the other an own-goal the like of which you see in a football bloopers montage, anyhow it’s Henbury and Rockleaze through to the final.

To the lower reaches at Tewkesbury Road, where Cheltenham Civil Service in desperate need of points took on an in form Henbury & Rockleaze who are pulling away from the bottom. Both teams were solid in defence with very little created in the first half. H&R came out into the second half the better of the two sides and took the lead with nice play down the left the ball was cut back for Sam Bailey to score. The H&R second came as a carbon copy of the first, the ball down the left, another cut back and Sam Harrison scores. With 20 minutes left H&R put a ball over the top, keeper Jon Dix hauled the forward back and the resulting penalty was dispatched by James Goulden for a 3-0 Henbury and Rockleaze win, and Services games in hand on others around them have essentially disappeared.

Saturday 1st March 2025

MATCH REPORT

On a wonderful Spring Day at Arnall Drive in a game expertly officiated by Referee Pope, Henbury & Rockleaze won the game against visitors Bromley Heath United with a last gasp penalty winner. In almost perfect footballing conditions despite a soft pitch both sides started strongly but it was H&RFC that had the first chance on 13 minutes when Harvey Moran found himself one on one with Will Ferguson in the Bromley Heath goal, but the keeper did brilliantly to gather in the attempted chip and ensure the score remained level. On 21 minutes another good save this time with his legs by Ferguson thwarted Sam Bailey who found himself free at a tight angle after a poor back pass. On 37 minutes Bromley Heath took the lead when Mason Lewis fired past Harry Trett from the corner of the 6-yard box after some loose play in the H&RFC defence. H&RFC should have equalised on 45 minutes, but George James mistimed his header on the 6-yard box allowing Ferguson to gather comfortably and maintain Bromley Heath’s lead going into half time.

On 48 minutes Fraser Butt got behind the Bromley Heath back four and smashed the ball across the 6-yard box for George James, but an unfortunate bobble meant the chance was gone. On 66 minutes Moran ran at the Bromley Heath defence from the left-hand side and cut inside but his drilled effort sailed over the crossbar. Bromley Heath should have extended their lead on 72 minutes when Cameron Ford skied his effort from 8 yards out with the goal gaping. H&RFC immediately went up the other end with substitute Tate Shaw running at the defence, his shot from outside the area hit the post and centre forward James was there to tap in the rebound for a richly deserved equaliser. It was now end to end with both keepers doing well but no major chances were created for either side until the 95th minutes when Tate Shaw again ran at the Bromley Heath defence and was upended in the box, there were no protests from the Bromley Heath defenders and Shaw stepped up to roll the penalty into the net and claim all 3-points in this evenly contested match.

MATCH REPORT

Gala Wilton took on Henbury & Rockleaze at Fairmile Gardens with both sides desperate for points. After a competitive first fifteen minutes Gala took the lead when Ryan Dobbins played a through ball for Rob Reid to latch onto, round Jordan Dunning and slot home. The remainder of the half was pretty even until just before the break when the game was turned on its head, unfortunately most of the turnaround was of Gala’s own making, firstly a mistake in defence gifted the ball to Drew Sawdon to equalise, then two minutes later an H&R corner came off the head of Harry O’Connor and into his own net. Gala came close to levelling things at the start of the second half, but Dobbins hit the crossbar. But, it was H&R who sealed the points with a late goal for Matt Harrison for a 3-1 win which gives them some breathing space at the bottom, and once again a Gala performance which wasn’t far off the mark, and making next weeks game against Quedgeley of huge importance.

MATCH REPORT

Perfect football conditions at Arnall Drive saw Henbury & Rockleaze and Wick play a great game of football with a grandstand finale. H&R made a good start and should have been in the lead on 4 minutes when George James got beyond the Wick backline and one-on-one with Kai Wilson blasted wide. This was just a respite for Wick, as on 9 minutes Marcus Williams in swinging corner eluded everyone and ended in the back of the net. Five minutes later James tapped in for 2-0 after wonderful build up play from Sam Bailey and Tasman Rook. Wick played some neat football themselves, Bayley Rudge shooting narrowly over from distance, but, it should have been three for H&R but James got his feet in a tangle four yards out. Wick started the second half with real intent and on 55 minutes Harry Trett gathered well from Liam McCracken’s free kick. H&R were close again on 63 when James headed past Wilson only to see an acrobatic clearance from Liam Robson. Wick then went straight up the other end and Freddie Mogg scored a marvellous goal from outside the box with Trett unmoved. Wick were now on top and only a goal-line clearance prevented a 70th minute equaliser. With time running out Wick were awarded a penalty on 90 minutes when Callum Winter upended a Wick forward and McCracken smashed in for 2-2. H&R kept pushing and after a cheap free kick on 94 minutes Williams cross struck the crossbar and Tate Shaw smashed home from the resulting melee for a H&R 3-2 win and severe damage to Wick’s title hopes

To Hamfields where Sharpness and Henbury & Rockleaze were unable to find a goal in a tight encounter. H&R nearly took the lead fifteen minutes in when Fraser Butt saw his free kick effort strike the bar. Alfie Jones nearly broke the deadlock for the hosts when sent through one-on-one but couldn’t beat keeper Harry Trett. Five minutes before the break Tom Palmer had a chance to open the scoring but blasted the ball over from Gayner’s cross. Chances were generally few and far between but when they did come both keepers were in excellent form. Sharks Will Tainton brought a good save out of Trett with a well struck shot from distance and Holder was next to keep his side in it when he made a great save from George James’ header which looked destined to break the deadlock. Sharpness were reduced to ten late-on, Priday picking up a second yellow but this had no bearing on the 0-0 result.

Up to Chalford who took on Henbury & Rockleaze and a hectic start. After 5 minutes a free kick to Chalford just outside the box and Ben Minnican bent the ball low around the wall and into the bottom right-hand corner for 1-0. A minute later, from the restart, a long ball forward down the right was taken on the bounce by Harvey Moran who lobbed Duane Portlock for 1-1. On 26 minutes Chalford broke down the right with Parker and Minnican, Parker’s cross was blocked, and from Locke’s corner Maryon flicked it on for Bennyworth to bury, 2-1 to Chalford. A few minutes later Maryon shot from the edge but his daisy cutter was easily saved by Jordan Dunning. Chalford continued to press and Portlock went long, Minnican played a cross in but was just out of Martin’s reach. Just past the hour Keylock played a ball through from just inside the H&R half, Dunning came out a long way but Maryon was there first and slid the ball in for 3-1. Twenty minutes from time Maryon cleverly flicked the ball on to George Parker who superbly chipped the advancing Dunning for 4-1. H&R nearly pulled one back when Nick Jones was one-on-one with Portlock who pulled off a great save. Chalford were on the attack again with great play between Roberts and Cooke who broke into the box and shot low to Dunning’s left but he pulled off a good save. So, 4-1 it ended to Chalford with H&R still anxiously looking over their shoulders.

MATCH REPORT

In testing conditions at Arnall Drive in testing conditions Henbury & Rockleaze took on Broadwell Amateurs who deservedly took the points back to the Forest of Dean. After a cagey start by both teams the first action was on 17 minutes when Jamie Belfitt’s effort was well saved by Jordan Dunning in the H&R goal. It was Broadwell who took the lead on 21 minutes when Jordan Locke tried his luck with a 30-yard free kick, the ball bouncing in front of Dunning wrong footing him and nestling in the middle of the goal. H&R equalised on 37, when Fraser Butt beat the offside trap on the right and crossed for Drew Sawdon to stroke the ball into an empty net. Broadwell started the second half still on top, but it was H&R with the first chance, Sawdon narrowly wide with a back post header. On the hour Broadwell gained a penalty for pushing and Locke stroked the ball home for 2-1. Dunning made up for his earlier error making a brilliant save when one-on-one with Dan Brain. The game became quite fractious and Joe Hodson saw red for H&R for retaliation, but the last action of the game saw Marcus Williams missed a decent chance to level things scooping the ball over from 4 yards and so the points went to Broadwell 2-1.

MATCH REPORT

On a sunny Saturday afternoon at the Stoke Gifford stadium Stoke Gifford SGS United took on Henbury & Rockleaze and a game largely dominated by SGS from start to finish although H&R sat in a very organised shape. But, it was SGS who took the lead on 12 minutes, Jake Gifford went down the right and crossed in, which was cleared into the unfortunate Cam Tarr and ricocheted into the net for the opener. A defensive lapse almost allowed H&R in but George James 35-yard lobbed effort was just wide. SGS could have had a second but Jordan Dunning denied Ollie Stevenson. H&R began to grow into the game but despite winning a few set-pieces in good positions they never really tested Evan Healan in the Gifford goal. The second half had a similar theme with Gifford having most of the possession but both teams struggled to break each other down, that was until the 70th minute when a corner was well met by Lawrence Mitchell and Abraham pounced to make it 2-0. Two minutes later Abraham turned provider running 40 yards down the right to beat his man and whipping in a delightful cross that tempted Dunning out allowing Stevenson to nod home easily. The SGS win was soured a little when Dan Worton got a second yellow but nevertheless it was a fine 3-0 victory for SGS.

MATCH REPORT

In the Forest, Ruardean Hill Rangers took on Henbury & Rockleaze and it was Hill who made a fast start with H&R penned in, and after only two minutes Hill’s Max Telling rattled the H&R crossbar from 25 yards. Straight down the other end Aaron Underwood slipped but made a great recovery save from Fraser Butt. All action, five minutes in an overhead kick from Ruardean’s Kane Sansom was tipped over by Jordan Dunning and from the resulting corner Kane Fellows hits the post. Following a scuffed H&R shot on 8 minutes, a minute later unmarked Drew Sawdon headed H&R in front from a corner somewhat against the run of play. Two minutes later Sawdon lashed his second in from a tight angle following a defensive mix up. On 18 minutes it was three, Underwood unusually fumbling an H&R corner gifting Sawdon his hat-trick. On the half hour with Hill trying to salvage something they were denied by the H&R defence with Dunning struggling to get back across his goal. Five minutes before the break an Ollie Mason free kick was kept out by Dunning and Just after the break a double Underwood save kept Hill in touch. Up the other end Dunning made a good save to keep Mason’s free kick out, and Hill were given a lifeline on 61 when Mason was pulled to the ground in the box and Steve Clark scored the resulting penalty kick. Hill were starting to control things and a Clark’s effoert was saved with Mason’s follow-up blocked. Fifteen minutes from time Clark hit the post after finding himself a little room and then Dunning denied Sansom’s half volley. On 80 minutes Dunning again saved his team from a Mason free kick. Five minutes to go and H&R defenders put their bodies on the line to deny Fellows in the six-yard box. Two minutes from time Hill’s frustration was summed up with Telling retaliating and getting a red card and there it ended 3-1 to H&R.

MATCH REPORT

At Pen Park it was honours even in a one-sided affair between Filton Athletic and Henbury & Rockleaze. Filton were out of the blocks from the off, an early Merrett cross out for a corner but Tom Fry was then caught offside. Moments later Merrett was put in again by Fry but his cross was over the top. The pressure continued and Venables crossed for Jack Cole to head straight at Jordan Dunning. A further Trey Merrett effort was blocked by Jordan Buckett. Still only 20 minutes gone when Kieran Cooper headed over Hillier’s cross. Five minutes before the break Merrett was through again from Jack Cutler but the on-rushing Dunning foiled him. The second half continued in the same vein, Filton having most of the ball and openings. Merrett shot just over, Fraser Venables’ shot well saved by Dunning, and Merrett drew another Dunning save from the resulting corner, Fry then headed another corner straight at Dunning. And after all that, the goal for the hosts came on 63 minutes as Merrett tapped in after Venables shot was well saved by Dunning. On 67 a rare H&R break saw Nick Jones cross go over. And after all the virtually continuous Filton pressure the inevitable happened when keeper Barry Phillips dwelt on the ball too long and allowed Joe Hodson to poke in the equaliser. And there it is! After virtually total domination Filton had to settle for a point at 1-1.

Saturday 2nd November 2024

MATCH REPORT

First to Arnall Drive where Henbury and Rockleaze took on Cheltenham Civil Service on a fine autumnal day in what turned out to be an often-fiery match. H&R should have had the lead on 4 minutes with Callum Winter one-on-one with Jon Dix who saved well with his legs. The next thirty minutes were fairly uneventful, but things came to life on 34 when, after an H&R back line mix up Cam Blacker slotted past Jordan Dunning for 1-0 to Service. However, the lead didn’t last long, as a minute later Winter fired a post rebound past Dix to level things up. Service were rather fired up for the restart and retook the lead two minutes in when a well worked free kick foxed the H&R defence and ended up at Micolaj Rewczuk’s feet who calmly slotted past Dunning, who was to make a terrific save from Blacker to prevent a 63rd minute third Service goal. Things heated up and Jordan Buckett was sin-binned on 70. A few minutes later Dix made a good save from a dipping Fraser Butt shot and ten minutes from time Butt struck a Service post. On 83 minutes Service secured the points when Harvey White had a simple tap-in following a break away. Sam Bailey scrambled one in for H&R in time added on but Service stood firm to deservedly take the three-points, 3-2, back up the M5.

BROMLEY HEATH UNITED 5
HENBURY & ROCKLEAZE 0

Saturday 26th October 2025

MATCH REPORT

Bromley Heath United entertained Henbury & Rockleaze, both teams arrived at Pomphrey Hill with just 6 points on the board due to below par starts to the campaign, so this game could be a turning point for the rest of the season. On a perfect day for football and with the pitch in great condition both teams started the game at a ferocious pace, playing some good quick passing football. Bromley were rewarded on 10 minutes when Jack Withey, Bromley' captain, scored with a trademark bullet header from a corner. Two minutes later the opportunity to go further ahead was squandered when a cross was hit over the bar from close range. Both teams continued to play good pacey football and although the game was even Bromley were just edging the number of chances created. On 35 minutes Bromley's Trai Elliston-Sackett gained just reward for his outstanding work rate in midfield by creating a second Bromley goal through sheer determination to win the ball. His final pass was hit hard and low into the back of the net by Cam Ford. It was Bromley's two wide men who combined to put Bromley further ahead just before half time when Ollie Hanham cleverly intercepted a pass to run 30yds and crossed the ball to Fletcher Cripps to hit home after a well timed run from the opposite wing.

The second half understandably was a little more sedate, but Henbury & Rockleaze didn't throw in the towel and continued to play good passing football but without a cutting edge. Bromley grabbed another couple of late goals to seal a deserved win. A free kick on the edge of the box from Nathen Rose which went in via a deflection off the defender. And an own goal after a shot was cleared off the line only to ricochet into the net off another defender

MATCH REPORT

To the League Cup and to Arnall Drive on an Autumnal day for Henbury & Rockleaze against Hanham Athletic who should arguably been in front on three minutes when Karim Rendall was one-on-one with Jordan Dunning but struck the outside of the post. It was a cagey affair and it wasn’t until the 23rd minute when Dan Webb went clear for H&R, but his fierce shot didn’t trouble Ashton Trott. H&R broke the deadlock on 41 when Sam Bailey sprinted away playing in James Goulden who crossed for Callum Winter to turn the ball in from close range. H&R thought they’d go in to the break 1-0 up but Hanham had other ideas when Rendall was played in over the top and finished expertly past Dunning for 1-1. The second half started with a few good minutes of Hanham pressure, Dunning saving from Sam Archer and again on 58 minutes when he saved superbly from Rendall in a one-on-one. On 65 minutes Bailey found himself one-on-one with Trott, but the keeper did well to turn the ball round the post. It was at this point that H&R started to dominate and on 68 Bailey latched onto a through ball from George James and struck the ball past Trott. Three minutes later Kacper Kalkowski and Jordan Dent combined for Dent to place the ball past Trott for a third. Five minutes later Dent did it again with a fine strike from the edge after Trott couldn’t deal with an awkward back pass. On 82 Jordan Rickman rose well from a free kick and his well-placed header past Dunning gave Hanham their second. However, H&R weren’t going to let Hanham back in and went straight up the other end with Joe Hodson turning in Kalkowski’s cross for a fifth. So there it is! Last years finalists are out with H&R convincingly making the semis by 5-2.

MATCH REPORT

At a bright Arnall Drive, Henbury & Rockleaze took on Gala Wilton, and with H&R still looking for a league win they took the lead as early as the third minute when Jordan Dent met a Sam Bailey cross and beat Oscar Bignell with a stooping header. A few minutes on it was almost two when Calum Winter’s fierce shot was well blocked by Kieran Mace in the six-yard box. It wasn’t all one-way traffic as on twelve minutes Harry O’Connor skimmed the H&R crossbar. On 16 minutes Dent had another chance, his well-directed effort well saved by Bignell. On 35 minutes Jordan Dunning made a brilliant one-handed save from an Ethan Vaughan 22-yard free kick. Just before the break Drew Sawdon got a header in from a corner but Bignell was up to the task again. Dunning then tipped over a cross-shot from Vaughan. The second half started at a slower pace until ten minutes in when Sawdon thought he’d scored from a back post volley until the linesman intervened. H&R were not perturbed and on 58 minutes a great cross from Nick Jones was met by Dent with a powerful header straight at Bignell, but Winter was there to smash the rebound home. On 66 minutes Dan Webb went through but was thwarted by Bignell. The game became really stretched with numerous corners and free kicks for both sides but neither keeper was called upon to make any difficult saves and 2-0 to H&R it ended.

Saturday 28th Septemberl 2024

MATCH REPORT

At Arnall Drive Henbury & Rockleaze took on Stoke Gifford SGS United and for a change H&R were on the right end of a dramatic finish! SGS started brightly with lots of energy and crisp passing and after looking the better side deservedly took the lead on 21 minutes when good work by Even Maidment crafted a chance for Jake Abraham whose effort was well saved by Jordan Dunning only to see the ball squirm to Rudy Hill who made no mistake from a yard out. It was almost two a minute later, Abraham’s shot from the edge just wide. This was a wake-up call for H&R who became the better side for much of the remainder of the match. On half time Jordan Dent rose highest from a left wing cross to head narrowly wide and then Nick Jones forced a good full-length diving save by Oli Gargett. The second half was a good spectacle for County League football both sides getting the ball down and playing football on a decent surface. Dent should have scored on 55 but his back post header was badly mis-directed and then on 70 Jake Abraham could have sealed the points for SGS one-on-one with Dunning, but his lob was well over. There were long periods of H&R pressure but Gargett was rarely called on to make any saves, however, these long periods of H&R pressure took it out of SGS and on 90 minutes a Brandon Boontan through ball found Drew Sawdon who took the ball in his stride and from 8 yards blasted past a bewildered Gargett. Both sides forced corners in the 9 minutes added time but couldn’t find a winner and 1-1 it ended.

Saturday 14th September 2024

MATCH REPORT

A surprisingly poor start for Henbury & Rockleaze continued at Wick on a glorious afternoon on an immaculate pitch. Wick started the better creating two great chances in the first five minutes the first cleared off the line and the second a fluffed shot from close range. H&R settled and on 14 Kai Wilson in Wick’s goal saved well. Wick opened the scoring with a great break down the right and a driven low cross was met by Adam Campbell to slot home, and a few minutes later an almost identical move ended up over the top. On 26 good work by Jordan Dunning in H&R’s goal prevented a second. H&R came back and a lunging deflection by a Wick defender preserved the lead and the ball ping-ponged about in front of the Wick goal from the resulting corner. Wick immediately attacked the visitors goal but Dunning was on form again. H&R dominated the late stages of the half but Wick held on. H&R continued pressing after the break and Wick were living dangerously and on 55 minutes H&R had a shot come crashing off the post. A minute later, however, they were level with Brandon Boontam’s header giving Wilson no chance. H&R continued to ask questions as Wick dug deep to stay in the game. But on 80, against the run of play, Wick retook the lead when Archie Parry found the net from the edge of the box low into the corner. H&R pressed to level matters but on the counter Parry sealed a 3-1 Wick victory with a great finish.

CHALFORD 1

Saturday 7th September 2024

MATCH REPORT

Henbury & Rockleaze defeated Chalford to gain their first win of the season and first win in the Les James League Cup for 7 years! The game started very fast with two evenly matched sides, Duane Portlock in the Chalford goal was the first called into action when he turned a Sam Bailey effort away to safety on 9 minutes, whilst the game was end to end Henbury & Rockleaze took the lead on 15 minutes when Dan Webb got behind the defence and cut the ball back to Bailey who was there to side foot the ball into the net from 4 yards out. Jamie Lock then struck the cross bar with a fierce drive on 20 minutes with Harry Trett well beaten in the Henbury & Rockleaze goal, fortunately the ball was hacked away to safety. Chalford had lots of pressure at the end of the 1st half and forced several corners all of which were dealt with by the Henbury & Rockleaze backline.

Henbury & Rockleaze started the 2nd half on top and went 2-0 up on 49 minutes when Drew Sawdon struck a great shot past Portlock from the edge of the area after good build up play by James Goulden and Dan Webb. On 65 minutes Henbury & Rockleaze thought they sealed the cup win when Dent fired home from a Dan Webb cross but was adjudged to have been in an offside position and then on 73 minutes Dan Webb perhaps should have done better when one on one with the Portlock, although the keeper spread himself well and saved with his legs. Chalford did manage to get on the scoresheet when skipper Johnny Davis scored with a thunderbolt header from a corner on 88 minutes to setup what could have been a nervy ending for Henbury & Rockleaze although they managed to soak up the pressure to secure their first win of the season.

MATCH REPORT

Henbury & Rockleazes continue their poor start to the season with a disjointed performance at home to a dominant Sharpness side. Henbury & Rockleaze should have scored early on when they broke down the right-hand side, but Kacper Kalkowski passed rather than taking a shot and Nick Jones effort was saved by a back tracking defender, Sharpness broke away down their right Mears cross struck the crossbar with the defence scrambling leaving man of the match Liam Harper to fire home form 3 yards out. On 14 minutes Dan Webb cut in from the left and his fine effort was inches wide from curling in. on 26 minutes Kieran Bennett pulled the ball back from the right bye line leaving Harper with another tap in to make it 2-0. On 28 minutes Cam Tarr made a wonderful save down to his right saving from a Harper downward header and just before the break on 45 minutes Bennett struck the post from 15 yards out with Tarr beaten.

The second half started in much the same vein and on 54 minutes Archie Mears raced clear of the defence and in a one-on-one situation with Tarr struck the ball well to make it 3-0. Substitute Jordan Dent reduced the arrears on 65 minutes with a left foot drive form 25 yards out which nested in the corner of the net, however, within a minute Harper had his deserved hattrick with a rasping freekick from 20 yards out. The remainder of the game petered out with Sharpness in control but without needing to do much more to take the points.

At Arnall Drive Henbury and Rockleaze took on Chalford in bright sunny but gusty conditions and had the better of the early chances with shots by Dan Webb and Jordan Buckett narrowly wide. Chalford responded with close efforts by Ryan Harry and Andrew Maryon, and indeed were in front soon after with George Parker played in and finishing with a good shot from just inside the area. Chalford finished the half well on top with a few close efforts. The second half started with both sides going close. A Chalford corner was met with a good header Jonathan Davis but H&R broke quickly with good build up down the left and Nick Jones’ cross was controlled and hammered home by Marcus Williams for 1-1. Both sides probed for control and Chalford had a series of corners which were defended with difficulty in the gusty conditions and in time added on Jones’ cross glanced off the Chalford crossbar and to safety for an evenly contested 1-1 draw.

On Friday evening in front of 167 spectators Henbury and Rockleaze entertained Almondsbury at Arnall Drive for an evenly contested affair with all the goals coming right at the end. H&R should have had the lead on 19 minutes with Jordan Dent went through on goal but his weak effort was easily saved by Burgess. On 27 Almonds Nathan Brown had a spectacular 25 yarder saved by Jordan Dunning. Five minutes before the break Burgess saved superbly from Dent. Right on half-time Danny Webb was through on goal but Burgess, again, made a decent save with his legs. On 55 minutes Nick Jones free kick for H&R was narrowly wide after a deflection off the Almonds wall and on 62 Liam Nicholls should have broken the deadlock for Almonds when through on Dunning’s goal but only managed to scuff his shot wide. The visitors took the lead on 87 minutes when the ball fell to Craig Lancastle who effortlessly stroked the ball past Dunning from six yards out. On 93 it was two when the ball appeared to ricochet off Zach Morgan and over a diving Dunning. H&R deservedly pulled one back on 96 minutes forcing the ball home from a corner and Almondsbury deservedly took three points, from a 2-1 win.

Another fairly close one at Waterwells where Quedgeley Wanderers took on Henbury & Rockleaze who started the proceedings well with plenty of the ball, creating a few half chances giving keeper Nathan Charnock something to think about. Dylan Venn had the best chance for the hosts on the six- yard box smashing a dropping ball stopped well by Jordan Buckett heading the bullet away. However, on the half hour Dan Webb was put through and poked the ball past Charnock for 1-0 to the Rocks, and then Jensen Beard pressed and forced Charnock into a 1 on 1 save. H & R then sent a long ball over everyone to George James and Charnock had another save to make. The second half started with Rocks having much of the ball but Quedgeley kept a tight shape. Rocks keeper had a few simple saves to make and Quedgeley were largely kept at bay. In the 83rd minute Webb was played through but Charnock again kept him out. With minutes left Charnock went up field for a last-ditch free kick and he kept the ball alive poking it to Jenner who played in Sean Lawson on the edge of the box, and he hammered the ball in for 1-1 and there were ecstatic celebrations for a big Quedgeley point.
